SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: “DNA of Engagement: How Organizations Create & Sustain Highly Engaging Cultures”
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers: \n \nRebecca Ray\, Ph.D.\nExecutive Vice Presiedent\, Knowledge Organization and Human Capital Practice Lead\nThe Conference Board \n \nDavid Dye\, Ph.D.\nDirector\, Human Capital\nDeloitte Consulting LLP \n\n  \nSession Description: \nThe topic of discussion will be DNA of Engagement: How Organizations Create & Sustain Highly Engaging Cultures. To answer this question\, Research Fellows of The Engagement Institute along with researchers from Deloitte\, Sirota and The Conference Board\, studied 12 organizations of varying size\, structure\, products/service and mission. Through interviews with executives\, surveys\, site visits and analysis\, the findings revealed eight common elements at the core of each organization:\n-Alignment of Business Strategy and Engagement Strategy\n-An Organizational Philosophy that Emphasizes a Core Purpose\n-Formal Programs and Policies that Drive the Engagement Agenda\n-Open\, Proactive\, Leader-Driven Communication about Engagement\n-A Workplace (Physical and Virtual) and Organizational Structure that Promotes Collaboration and Inclusion\n-A Regular Cadence for Assessment and Follow-Up\n-Leaders who are Expected and Empowered to Build Engagement\n-Demonstration of the Business Impact of Engagement\nIn this special briefing\, we will headline the findings and share examples to showcase the philosophies\, actions\, and outcomes of these profiled organizations in an effort to bring to life the elements of highly engaged cultures. Central to this report are the elements of engagement and the descriptors which are the markers —the 23 pairs in the DNA helix\, if you will—of those organizations that are highly engaged. We will share a tool for assessing where your organization is on its own journey to becoming a “highly engaged” culture. \n\nEvent Materials (members only) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Coaching for Performance"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker \n \nJohn Ullmen\nLecturer of Management and Organizations\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n\nSummary:  \nProfessor Ullmen will focus his session on how to improve personal coaching and communication skills to be an effective leader. \nThe purpose of coaching is help others learn\, grow and be more effective in professional life. It’s a challenging skillset because it requires adapting to the development priorities\, learning styles\, motivational profiles\, strengths and improvement areas of others\, who might differ substantially in all those ways and more from the coach. Done well\, coaching requires high-level listening\, self-awareness\, question-asking skills\, patience\, empathy and a willingness to set one’s ego\, agenda and biases aside while in the “development zone” with another person. Effective coaching is also immensely rewarding to the coach. The pride and meaningfulness that come from helping others overcome obstacles\, barriers\, self-imposed limits\, derailing tendencies etc.\, is among the most satisfying experiences a leader can have. It’s timeless and priceless. Ask the leaders you most admire in the later stages of their careers what they are most proud of\, and you’ll likely hear about the people they had the privilege to help grow toward their potential. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Bringing Marketing Strategies to HR: Tools for Building Employee Engagement"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker \n \nSuzanne Shu\nAssistant Professor of Marketing\nUCLA Anderson School \n\nSummary: \nOffering a strong value proposition is a key component of both consumer and employee communications. In this session\, we will apply ideas from consumer marketing – such as segmentation\, targeting\, positioning\, and branding – to the question of how to better communicate with new and existing employees. By better tailoring communications to the needs of particular segments\, we can build stronger employee engagement and company buy-in. We will also discuss specific communication strategies and consider how individual judgments\, especially during new employee onboarding\, can be affected by message content\, choice options\, aesthetics\, and other details. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Acting Decisively" and "The Psychology of Savings"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers: \n \nCraig Fox\nHo-Su Wu Term Chair in Management\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n \nShlomo Benartzi\nProfessor and Co-Chair of the Behavioral Decision Making Group\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n\nSummary: \n“Acting Decisively” \nMaking choices is a core function of leadership. In our first session led by Dr. Craig Fox\, we’ll take a critical look at how we tend to evaluate decisions. In addition we’ll examine factors that can make decision making difficult or make people want to postpone decisions. Next\, we will review distinct varieties of indecisiveness and the behaviors that we observe in order to determine whether or not a colleague or leader is decisive. Finally\, we’ll discuss some strategies that you can use for making faster decisions. \n“The Psychology of Savings” \nOur second session features Dr. Benartzi\, one of the world’s top experts in behavioral finance. He will discuss how half of the American workforce lacks access to a retirement savings plan. Approximately one-third of those who do have access fail to join. Those who do join tend to save too little and often make unwise investment decisions. In short\, the defined contribution world is in crisis and employees need help. \nWe’ll analyze the behavioral challenges that led to this crisis\, including inertia\, loss aversion\, and myopia\, and recommend science-based behavioral best practices to overcome these obstacles. Based on the book “Save More Tomorrow: Practical Behavioral Finance Solutions to Improve 401(k) Plans”\, this session will provide you with ideas and insights to get more employees to join their workplace retirement plan\, and help them save more and save smarter. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Big Data: HR Analytics"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers \n \nPhillip Leslie\nAssociate Professor\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n \nIan Larkin\nVisiting Professor of Business Administration\nHarvard Business School & UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management \n \nRob Witoff\nData Scientist\nNASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory \n\nSummary: \nHow data analytics is being applied to human resources. We first review the data analytics landscape—what are the different kinds of analytics being utilized\, what kinds of expertise is needed\, and how are organizations changing to become more data-driven in the decision making process? Then we focus on HR data analytics in particular—the use of data analytics in recruiting\, performance evaluation\, compensation analysis\, and measuring as well enhancing employee engagement (e.g.\, shared dashboards with all employees). Specific examples of HR data analytics being developed at NASA’s JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) will be presented to highlight the use of structured and novel data sources\, data visualization\, and to demonstrate the kinds of insights that data analytics can provide for HR leaders. With help from the audience\, we will also discuss the organizational challenges to HR data analytics\, and perhaps the most difficult challenge of all: how to translate insights to actions in an HR context. \nPhillip Leslie\, Associate Professor of Strategy at the Anderson School\, conducted a session on translating strategy into action to enhance value and organizational performance as well as discuss the implications for capabilities that are needed for managers and leaders to be effective. Among the concepts and capabilities to be discussed are: strategic thinking\, strategy translating and sense making\, middle managers as empowered visionaries\, and transforming organizational capabilities to exploit big data. Our interactive discussions will include a Strategic Leadership exercise and a Data Driven Management Round Table Discussion. \nIan Larkin is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Strategy group at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He researches the optimal use of formal rewards systems by companies\, given the complex and often unanticipated effects these systems have on employee motivation and decision making. His research quantifying the cost incurred by a major enterprise software vendor due to salespeople deliberately gaming their sales commission system\, published in The Journal of Labor Economics\, is one of the most prominently cited empirical studies of incentive system gaming. It was the basis for a case study widely used in MBA classes on compensation and human resource management. \nRob is the IT Data Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and his team is enabling NASA to explore data in novel ways. Before JPL\, he founded the venture backed startup\, Apigy. He has since lead development for interplanetary data visualization software and developed a laser communication system on the International Space Station with the OPALS project. Rob is NASA’s first IT Data Scientist and his data science team incubates solutions to Big Data problems for spacebound explorers\, earthborn assets and the people that make them possible. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Motivation and Unethical Behavior"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: \n \nScott Wiltermuth\nAssistant Professor of Management and Organizations and Psychology\nUniversity of Southern California \n\nSummary: \nScott Wiltermuth\, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations and Psychology at the USC Marshall School of Business\, will demonstrates how tactics that are designed to boost motivation and effort in the workplace may also boost the incidence of unethical behavior. In particular\, he will show that even relatively subtle tactics that do not involve larger rewards for unethical behavior can increase the risk of unethical behavior. The presentation therefore highlights non-obvious tips for human resources professionals looking to monitor and\, ultimately\, to curb unethical behavior within their firms. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Rethinking the Performance Appraisal Process"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: \nWayne Cascio\nRobert H. Reynolds Distinguished Chair in Global Leadership\nUniv. of Colorado. \n\n  \nSummary: \nPerformance Management is a topic of importance as more emphasis is being placed on growth and competitiveness. A poll of 700 business leaders in 2009 revealed that 92 percent recognize that superior talent provides a competitive advantage.  Yet\, “60 percent of workers say reviews don’t do anything to help their future performance.”  On September 18\, HARRT and its distinguished speakers and discussants will examine both sides of the dialogue as to whether and under what circumstances\, performance appraisals can be an integral part of high performance culture and under what circumstances this method falls short. \nWayne F. Cascio\, who holds the Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver\, is a recognized and influential scholar and writer in the field of Human Resource Management.  Professor Cascio will take a practical approach to what steps can be taken to make the performance-management process more relevant and acceptable to the individuals who will be affected by it.  As our distinguished speaker\, he will cover how to best fit performance management to the strategic direction of the business\, who should be involved in the evaluation process\, how they should be trained and what an effective performance management process looks like in connection with the results of a pre-survey of HARRT members covering both the technical and interpersonal aspects of the performance management process. \nA panel of our members—Cozette Hart and Joyce Rowland—will present the highlights of the survey results on performance management and evaluation\, sharing their experiences\, issues and approaches to performance management given the cultures of their organizations and the composition of their workforces to stimulate small group discussion among our members\, faculty and guests. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Developing Brand Ideals to Inspire and Motivate Employees"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: \nSanjay Sood\nAssociate Professor of Marketing\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n\nSummary: \nProfessor of Marketing Sanjay Sood will conduct an interactive session on how business depends on meeting market demands\, understanding the customer and meeting their needs for business success. Professor Sood will specifically focus on brand ideals to inspire and motivate employees. A brand ideal is the “higher purpose” or main reason why a brand exists. Many companies focus their brand on consumers via advertising campaigns. The strongest brands\, however\, create an ideal that works from the inside-out–the ideals motivate employees and consumers with a compelling vision. These companies align the corporate culture\, incentives\, and processes to fit the brand ideal. According to a recent study\, companies with strong brand idealssignificantly outperformed the S&P500 over a ten year period.how managing external customersimpacts the organization’s operating and human resource management practices. \n\n  \nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Persuasion at Work: How to Win Support for Your Ideas\, Proposals and Initiatives"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker \nNoah Goldstein \n \nHR & Organizational Behavior\nUCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management \n\nEvery day we face the challenge of persuading others to do what we want.   As leaders\, it is essential be persuasive.  This session will provide insights into strategies and tactics for improving responsiveness to your arguments\, requests and agendas.  We will learn the scientific principles behind the art of persuasiveness drawing largely from   the psychological fundamentals of persuasive communication.   While learning practical persuasion tactics and how to apply them in a variety of situations\, HARRT members will also learn about common persuasion mistakes and how to avoid them. \nIn advance of this meeting we ask you to reflect on initiatives that you have proposed or situations in which you have tried to persuade others to support a proposal.  So that we have a sense of the issues most relevant to you\, we ask that you send a brief description in advance\, if you can.  This information will be treated as confidential and used for designing the session content and group exercise.  We will have a group discussion exercise in which you will have an opportunity to apply some of the principles presented.  Please come prepared to discuss one or two situations in which you can apply the new knowledge you have: \n1) One can be something you want to propose for the future and how you can change your strategy and content to be more persuasive. \n2) an alternative is to reflect on something you have proposed in the past and how it could have been changed to be more persuasive.

SUMMARY:Senior Round Table: "Creative Problem Solving in Challenging Times"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers \nIris Firstenberg\, Ph.D\nAssociate Adjunct Professor\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \nIntroduction and comments by Professor David Lewin \n\nA great leader helps keep a team engaged and energized when the pressure is high. In times of great uncertainty and rapid change\, the challenge to maintain a sense of focus\, drive\, and enthusiasm requires unique efforts. We will discuss how to inspire and motivate people so that even in difficult times\, people can accomplish extraordinary results. We will also discuss strategies for tapping the human potential for creative thinking in the workplace as a way of dealing with uncertainty and leading change in difficult times.  \nIris Firstenberg\, Associate Adjunct Professor at the Anderson Graduate School of Management\, will discuss how a culture of innovation rapidly recognizes change and adapts with new learning and action.  Successful organizations operate on the edge of chaos and embrace risk\, error\, and ambiguity as a way of life while practicing strategies that reduce the need for doing\, undoing\, and redoing.  This session provides provocative ideas and tools to give participants the adaptive capacity to work creatively with change and uncertainty and adapt more quickly to emerging opportunities. \nIris will lead an interactive session on setting the stage for creative thinking which focuses on the constraints that inhibit our ability to think with flexibility and delivers powerful thinking strategies that expand possibilities and prepares leaders to meet new challenges and create better opportunities as the future unfolds.  Through group discussion and conversation we will generate actionable ideas for participants to take back to their organizations.
