SUMMARY:UCLA Anderson Forecast: March 2017 Economic Outlook "TWEETONOMICS"
DESCRIPTION:Stocks\, the dollar and interest rates soared after the surprising election of Donald Trump on the assumption of a major shift in fiscal policy. Now that immigration and trade issues have moved to the fore\, the markets are less certain as to the magnitude and timing of the fiscal changes. Our forecast will discuss the implication of these cross currents and present a second pass at Trumponomics.

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Executive Education: “Asked and Answered”
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: \nProfessor Doug Lichtman\nProfessor of Law\nUCLA School of Law\nFinancial Statement Analysis\, Valuation\, and Corporate Development\nUCLA Executive Education \nSponsored by Anderson School of Management\, Executive Education Department \n\nSummary: \nOur guest speaker\, Doug Lichtman\, Professor of Law\, UCLA School of Law\, will draw on a variety of literatures and experiences to think through the art of asking and answering questions. Some of the materials will be drawn directly from interactions familiar to the HARRT audience; for example\, we will think about questions an interviewer can effectively use to elicit useful information from an interviewee. Other materials will invite participants to think about the world from an unfamiliar perspective\, however; for example\, we will think about the questions a lawyer asks potential jurors in order to quickly ferret out harmful biases. The presentation will involve a mix of faculty lecture\, group conversation\, and small-group simulations. \n*We are also very excited to announce that HARRT has been approved as a Recertification Provider by SHRM\, so you can now earn Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP by attending all our Round Tables. \nAbout the presenter: \nDoug Lichtman is a tenured professor of law at UCLA\, with teaching responsibilities in the Law School\, the Anderson School of Management\, and the Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. Lichtman’s research focuses on the strategic use of intellectual property\, considering questions about how firms harness patent\, copyright\, and related legal regimes to support and define their products. Lichtman is also increasingly focused on issues related to argumentation\, and indeed recently launched a first-year seminar at the Law School focused on persuasion in oral and written forms. Lichtman’s academic work has been featured in journals including the Journal of Law & Economics\, the Yale Law Journal\, and the Harvard Business Review. He also on occasion writes for mainstream publications like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. In addition to his academic pursuits\, Mr. Lichtman maintains an active consulting practice\, advising Fortune 100 clients\, institutional investors\, and the State of California on patent\, copyright and antitrust strategy. Professor Lichtman has undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Duke University\, and a JD from Yale Law School.

DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers \nMichael Wolf\nChairman\nVets Bridge to Employment \nDan Goldenberg\nExecutive Director/VP\nCall of Duty Endowment/Activision Blizzard \nJoe Musselman\nFounder\nThe Honor Foundation (THF) \nCaptain Christian Dunbar\nFounder\nEthos Project \nMarjorie Morrison\nFounder and CEO\nPsychArmor \n\nWith the expectation that thousands of military personnel will leave the service and settle in Los Angeles in the next five years\, several programs have been initiated to assist with their transition to civilian jobs. The unemployment rate for post – 9/11 young veterans is 2.6 times the U. S. Unemployment rate of 5%. Part of the challenge is to get employers to understand the skills that veterans bring from their military experience and to get veterans to better explain and translate their experiences to future employers in order to secure viable positions that offer stability and growth. \nA project led by Mayor Eric Garcetti\, the 10\,000 Strong Initiative is a coalition of companies and community organizations who are united around a common goal of hiring 10\,000 local veterans by 2017. Our speakers will present various approaches to support this goal including skill gap training\, assessment tools and company programs to help employers hire and retain veterans. \n\n  \nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Data Analytics: The Future of HR”
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers: \n \nLeo Brajkovich Ph.D.\nSmarter Workforce Executive\nIBM \n \nJohn Howes\, Ph.D.\nSmarter Workforce Executive\nIBM \n\n  \nSummary: \nHR leaders must change how they recruit\, engage\, develop and retain people in order to improve business performance and remain competitive. What if you could help your leadership make better business decisions through the data you provide? Or easily predict the best employees for high-value roles\, as well as identify who will stay (or leave) your organization? Or analyze social “chatter” to be in tune with employees in real time? In this session thought leaders from IBM Smarter Workforce will describe how organizations all over the world\, including IBM\, are using predictive and prescriptive analytics to make all of this possible even for executives without deep analytic backgrounds. \nDr. Brajkovich is IBM’s Smarter Workforce Executive for the Western U.S. and Canada. The Smarter Workforce business includes IBM’s Talent Management software\, behavioral sciences\, workforce consulting and analytics solutions that improve HCM effectiveness and drive business performance. SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: “DNA of Engagement: How Organizations Create & Sustain Highly Engaging Cultures”
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speakers: \n \nRebecca Ray\, Ph.D.\nExecutive Vice Presiedent\, Knowledge Organization and Human Capital Practice Lead\nThe Conference Board \n \nDavid Dye\, Ph.D.\nDirector\, Human Capital\nDeloitte Consulting LLP \n\n  \nSession Description: \nThe topic of discussion will be DNA of Engagement: How Organizations Create & Sustain Highly Engaging Cultures. To answer this question\, Research Fellows of The Engagement Institute along with researchers from Deloitte\, Sirota and The Conference Board\, studied 12 organizations of varying size\, structure\, products/service and mission. Through interviews with executives\, surveys\, site visits and analysis\, the findings revealed eight common elements at the core of each organization:\n-Alignment of Business Strategy and Engagement Strategy\n-An Organizational Philosophy that Emphasizes a Core Purpose\n-Formal Programs and Policies that Drive the Engagement Agenda\n-Open\, Proactive\, Leader-Driven Communication about Engagement\n-A Workplace (Physical and Virtual) and Organizational Structure that Promotes Collaboration and Inclusion\n-A Regular Cadence for Assessment and Follow-Up\n-Leaders who are Expected and Empowered to Build Engagement\n-Demonstration of the Business Impact of Engagement\nIn this special briefing\, we will headline the findings and share examples to showcase the philosophies\, actions\, and outcomes of these profiled organizations in an effort to bring to life the elements of highly engaged cultures. Central to this report are the elements of engagement and the descriptors which are the markers —the 23 pairs in the DNA helix\, if you will—of those organizations that are highly engaged. We will share a tool for assessing where your organization is on its own journey to becoming a “highly engaged” culture. \n\nEvent Materials (members only) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Coaching for Performance"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker \n \nJohn Ullmen\nLecturer of Management and Organizations\nUCLA Anderson School of Management \n\nSummary:  \nProfessor Ullmen will focus his session on how to improve personal coaching and communication skills to be an effective leader. \nThe purpose of coaching is help others learn\, grow and be more effective in professional life. It’s a challenging skillset because it requires adapting to the development priorities\, learning styles\, motivational profiles\, strengths and improvement areas of others\, who might differ substantially in all those ways and more from the coach. Done well\, coaching requires high-level listening\, self-awareness\, question-asking skills\, patience\, empathy and a willingness to set one’s ego\, agenda and biases aside while in the “development zone” with another person. Effective coaching is also immensely rewarding to the coach. The pride and meaningfulness that come from helping others overcome obstacles\, barriers\, self-imposed limits\, derailing tendencies etc.\, is among the most satisfying experiences a leader can have. It’s timeless and priceless. Ask the leaders you most admire in the later stages of their careers what they are most proud of\, and you’ll likely hear about the people they had the privilege to help grow toward their potential. \n\nEvent Materials (members only)

SUMMARY:Associate Round Table: "Bringing Marketing Strategies to HR: Tools for Building Employee Engagement"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker \n \nSuzanne Shu\nAssistant Professor of Marketing\nUCLA Anderson School \n\nSummary: \nOffering a strong value proposition is a key component of both consumer and employee communications.
